There is a scene in the movie "Pirates of the Carribbean" where Kiera Knightly tells her soon to be captors that she is invoking one of their pirate laws. They proceed to tell her that the pirate's codes are more like guidelines than hard and fast laws. I fear sometimes that people approach the Bible this way. They don't believe that when the Bible says things like I. Corinthians 7:1-2, "Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband" that they are laws and rules. Some might say well that is extreme I'm dating and we're not supposed to touch at all. That's more of a guide line so that you don't go too far. Is that how you feel about the Bible when our societal norms don't mesh with what the Bible says? Just wondering...

Virtuous Magazine (me) and my friend Jennifer went to the West End Ladies' Day this past Saturday. It was amazing there were two awesome speakers and sisters in Christ. The first speaker was International Ambassador Ruth Davis and the second was Essence Magazine Editor-at Large Mikki Taylor! I gave her a copy of the premiere issue of Virtuous and she said she'd give me her thoughts on the mag. I wish I would've had a copy of the Spring issue because I think it looks so much better but you have to work with what you have. :) Anyways the day was really great and I saw a lot of friends I hadn't seen in a long time. The ladies of West End did a superb job. So yeah I am still on a little baby high! Also don't forget the Summer issue comes out in 1 week! Order your subscription now to ensure you get your copy. This article found on yahoo claims to present "hard" evidence as to why parents shouldn't spank their children. I believe anyone who reads this article and then compares it to children in their families or that they have seen in public will find its findings to be completley opposite from real life. I have personally found that children who are not spanked are "More likely to be defiant, demand immediate satisfaction of their wants and needs, get frustrated easily, have temper tantrums and lash out physically against others" than those who are. But maybe that's just me. I am not a "scientist" I just obey and believe my Bible. What do you think?

So, many people know that I love bargain and thrift shopping and as I was blog hopping I came across a blog called Show and Tell. She had the most amazing projects and this little gem was one of them. Immediately I knew I had to possess one! So off I went to the local Goodwill to gather my tools. And here is a picture tutorial of how you can have one too! Because as we all know the Virtuous woman was a diy-er. And something like this in the store would easily cost $20. Look forward to more diy and let me know how your projects, whatever they are, turn out. Happy hunting!

It's been FOREVER

I know it's been a long time since I've posted anything and for that I am sorry. I have been super busy working on the new issue, welcoming a friend's new baby and sharing the good news of Virtuous to other congregations. It was well received at MSOP and I was told that Sis. Cates loved it and said it was on par with Christian Woman! I am still reeling from that one. :) My dad just got back from the lectureship and took some photos of Virtuous in the library there and I will share those soon. Oh and building my own craft room table based on one from Pottery barn that I never could have afforded with the wonderful help of Ana over at Knock Off Wood! Pictures are attached and I promise I will post more often. Truly I have been quite negligent to my dear blog! How do you like the new background?

Some information about the work of our brothers and sisters in India. Who need support and encouragement!

I am Sunil Raju, 23-year old member and preacher of the Church of Christ in India. I have just completed my Bachelor's Degree in engineering and am hoping to continue my studies within the next year to obtain my Master's Degree, Lord willing. Along with my studies, I have been working to spread the New Testament truth here and bring many lost souls to Christ.
My grandfather has preached in various congregations since 1970. My father was also a Baptist church member until he married my mother and came to know the New Testament truth and was baptized in the Church of Christ. For the past 8 years my father has been completely involved in the Lord's work. He is now the preacher in Gonepudi Church of Christ, a small village near my town. I have been helping my father preach the Word of God in several villages. I came to know the New Testament truth through my father and began working for the Churches of Christ at the age of 17 years.
For the past 6 years we have been spreading the Word of God to many unreached villages and bringing many souls to Christ. We had a good harvest, but the workers became fewer. So, we began teaching and encouraging some church members and denomination preachers, leading them through the New Testament truth. Some of these preachers have begun preaching and starting congregations in other villages. We have 5 congregations at this time with about 20 members in each congregation. Preaching School
We are conducting Bible studies for the preachers at my home one day each month. Some denomination preachers are also attending the classes. Because of these Bible classes we have conducted for the preachers, 4 denomination preachers have been converted to the New Testament Church and have begun working with us. We have been providing traveling expenses, breakfast, and lunch to the preachers who attend the classes. Also, we have been helping our preachers with a small gift every 3 months. Orphan home
We have had many baptisms in the past few years. I hope and pray we will have many more conversions in the future. We have orphans, semi-orphans, distitutes and widows in some of our congregations. We have been feeding these orphan children and widows once or twice a month. We would dearly love to start an orphan home for these children to provide shelter, food, and clothing and to share the love of Christ with them. Most of our congregations are in villages and in tribal areas. All our church members are very poor. We help them with clothing, blankets and other necessities. We provide Bibles to the needy. GREAT Weekend

Hey everyone I had an awesome weekend and I hope you did too! I attended the Tara COC lectureship on Saturday, met up with some old friends and made some new ones! (Shout out to Teresa from Forest Park) :) Then I went to a friend's Pampered Chef party and all I can say about that was yum! I then enjoyed an amazing sermon by Bro. Eric Owens about what's really important in your life and that's saving your own soul and then saving the souls of the ones you love.

I use to own a bridal shop renting designer gowns and I decided to close it to focus on the magazine. So I had a woman come to look at a dress yesterday and she was telling me that this would be her second time being married. And so we had a good time trying on dresses and just talking. After she left I was wondering if I should say anything to her about scriptural reasons for being re-married. So later on that night I was doing my daily bible reading and in the chapters I was reading God tells Moses to go to Pharoh. Moses' reply is what struck me the most. He said, "Who am I that I should go to Pharoh?" Who am I that I should... is what I was thinking concerning this woman that I had just met. But then I thought I am the light of the world and if I don't who will?

So I called her and told her that I was concerned about her and told her what the scriptures said and she was so happy that I called. We had a good conversation and I mentioned that my father, who is a minister, does pre-marital counseling and she was very open to it. Needless to say when you do the right thing it always works out. Pray for courage and boldness to speak the truth of God's word. See people as the souls they are and try and help them wherein you can. Let's all try and remember what's truly important as we go through our daily walks.

Hey everyone hope you all had an enjoyable break for Dr. King's B-day. Just a few things happening over here at Virtuous. I met with the editor of Virtuous Mom and hashed out the plans for its contents and release. We were both very excited about the project and I am sure Christian moms everywhere will benefit from the variety of topics it will cover. And issue two of Virtuous is coming your way in less than two weeks! It is chock full of V-day goodies, health and beauty info and of course encouraging evangelism ideas and topics. And on a side note I just heard on the radio that Atlanta was voted the gayest city in the USA. I would've never guessed anyone could beat San Francisco, but alas it appears I was wrong. The many many many propositions that have been put up for homosexual "marriage" in the legislature have been voted against; showing that the country still has some sort of moral compass. I am sure many people would say I am anti-homosexuality; I am in fact simply Pro-God.

Here is a short list of ways you can help the Haitian relief efforts. The U.S. State Department Operations Center has set up the following number for Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti: 1-888-407-4747

The American Red Cross is pledging an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by this earthquake. They expect to provide immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. They are accepting donations through their International Response Fund.

•UNICEF has issued a statement that "Children are always the most vulnerable population in any natural disaster, and UNICEF is there for them." UNICEF requests donations for relief for children in Haiti via their Haiti Earthquake Fund. You can also call 1-800-4UNICEF.
•Donate through Wyclef Jean's foundation, Yele Haiti. Text "Yele" to 501501 and $5 will be charged to your phone bill and given to relief projects through the organization.

•Operation USA is appealing for donations of funds from the public and corporate donations in bulk of health care materials, water purification supplies and food supplements which it will ship to the region from its base in the Port of Los Angeles. Donate online at http://www.opusa.org/, by phone at 1-800-678-7255 or, by check made out to Operation USA, 3617 Hayden Ave, Suite A, Culver City, CA 90232.

•Save The Children has launched an emergency relief effort for Haiti. Donate to their fund to provide medical attention and clean water to children and families.

International Medical Corps is assembling a team of first responders and resources to provide lifesaving medical care and other emergency services to survivors of the earthquake. The IMC previously helped recovery efforts after September 2009's earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia, and the massive 2005 earthquake in Pakistan. Donate to the International Medical Corps through their 24-hour hotline at 800-481-4462

•Partners In Health reports its Port-au-Prince clinical director , Louise Ivers, has appealed for assistance: "Port-au-Prince is devastated, lot of deaths. SOS. SOS... Temporary field hospital by us at UNDP needs supplies, pain meds, bandages. Please help us." Donate to their Haiti earthquake fund.

•Mercy Corps is sending a team of emergency responders to assess damage, and seek to fulfill immediate needs of quake survivors. The agency aided families after earthquakes in Peru in 2007, China and Pakistan in 2008, and Indonesia last year. Donate online, call 1-888-256-1900 or send checks to Mercy Corps Haiti Earthquake Fund; Dept NR; PO Box 2669; Portland, OR 97208.

•Doctors Without Borders is on the ground and has set up clinics to treat injured in Haiti. Donate any amount so they can keep their efforts going.

SWAP 'n' SHOP

To celebrate the release of the next issue of Virtuous in Feburary, we are planning a swap 'n' shop! Basically everyone brings gently used and clean clothes, shoes, jewelry and housewares etc.. and the goods are put on display. Then we shop! What's left over is donated to charity. It's a win-win, you get to do some New Year's cleaning, get free stuff and donate to charity all at the same time. Light refreshments will also be served. The event will serve as a great way for all of us Virtuous women to meet and get to know each other. Dates and location are to TBA but let me know if you'd be interested, and sorry for those not in the Atlanta area. :(

Today I wanted to post a short story written by a talented young lady who I met through Virtuous. Her name is Brooke Reninger and she worships in Cerdar Falls, Iowa. Here is the story. Enjoy!

A Life Changing Song

Violet took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. Calm down, she told herself. Just one song and you’re done.

She was used to giving concerts; she had been doing them since she was seven. So she was also accustomed to the nerves that went along with them. But this was different. She was playing just one song in front of three judges and an average size audience. Just one song to leave her mark on the audience and mystify the judges. It would be quite a challenge, especially with the song she had chosen. But it would be worth it. She could finally be discovered, get a record deal, be a star! But she had to get past this first, she reminded herself.
Someone signaled her. It was her turn. She took another deep breath and walked out on stage. The lights were blinding. The middle judge smiled at her.

“Hello. What is your name, and what will you be doing?”

“I’m Violet Tercott and I’ll be playing the piano.”

“Excellent. You may begin whenever you are ready.”

Violet gave the judges a small smile and proceeded to the piano bench. She perched there gracefully for a moment, her fingers gently resting on the keys.
Then she began to play. As she moved through the song, her nervousness fled. She gave herself over to the melody, feeling it flow through her fingertips into her entire body. She felt every emotion of the harmonies; the anger as the seconds raged, the peacefulness when fifths sounded.

She ended with a flourish of fingers and keys, to the thunderous applause of the audience and a standing ovation from the judges. Almost in a daze, she managed a slight bow.
I did it, she thought. I’m on my way. Soon, the whole world will get to hear me play. In her heart, she knew this was the most important day of her entire life.

What must I do to be saved?

In the salvation of man's soul there are 2 necessary parts: God's part and man's part. God's part is the big part, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift if God; not of works, that no man should glory" (Ephesians 2:8-9). The love which God felt for man led him to send Christ into the world to redeem man. The life and teaching of Jesus, the sacrifice on the cross, and the proclaiming of the gospel to men constitute God's part in salvation.

Though God's part is the big part, man's part is also necessary if man is to reach heaven. Man must comply with the conditions of pardon which the Lord has announced. Man's part can clearly set forth in the following steps:

Hear the Gospel. "How shall they call on him whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?" (Romans 10:14).

Believe. "And without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing unto him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that seek after him" (Hebrews 11:6).

Repent of past sins. "The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent" (Acts 17:30).

Confess Jesus as Lord. "Behold here is water; What doth hinder me to be baptized ? And Philip said, if thou believeth with all thy heart thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God" (Acts 8:36-37).

Be baptized for the remission of sins. "And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38).

Live a Christian life. "Ye are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9).

OPEN INVITATION
Now that you are aware of a church in the 20th century which is built according to the blue prints of Christ's original church, why not become a member of it? In becoming a member of it, you will be called upon to do nothing which you cannot read in the New Testament. You will then live and worship just as the apostle-guided Christians of the first century did.
Not only is this return to New Testament Christianity a wonderful basis upon which all believers in Christ can unite, it is absolutely solid ground. If we do just what our Lord commanded we know that our salvation is certain. Come with us as we go back to the Bible, back to Christ and his church!

The State of the American Woman

TIME magazine has done a special on American women and what they want, how they feel and the changing climate of households. Women will now take the mens' place as the most employed gender, and about 40% of women are now the breadwinners in their family. Some of the research revealed that women have the most equality, liberation and freedom now than they have ever had; yet they are the unhappiest they have ever been. Some believed it was because of the all of the new repsonsibilities that come along with equality. What do you think? Follow the link above to read all of the articles they're pretty interesting.

Mainers' 53-47 vote to reject gay marriage does more than simply slap down a law that just six months ago had made Maine America's second state to permit same-sex couples to wed. With voters thronging to the polls, the closely watched - and ultimately not very close - vote extended the winning streak of gay marriage opponents nationwide, who have now prevailed in more than 30 straight state elections over whether to allow gays to marry. Just like Californians one year ago, Maine voters insisted on having their own say on an issue that simply will not go away.

I think the country has spoken on how they feel about homosexual marriage and many people who are pro-traditional marriage (they always try to make us anti-) are not members of the church of Christ. It really works I have been heavily burdened this week but God really will lift the sorrows from you if you allow Him to. Burdens are lifted at calvary all you have to do is leave them there. Focus on what you have control over and not on what you cannot control. Jesus loves you and will carry through whatever you may be going through. I am getting away this weekend for some much needed relaxation on a ladies retreat, will bring photos when I get back. Hope you have a great weekend!

So last night was the culmination of the Tara COC gospel meeting with Bro. Caleb Campbell. He did a fine job with his last lesson entitled "I want to go to Heaven Because..." His points were as follows I want to go to heaven because:

1. Heaven will be a place of reward; Heb. 12:1-2, Rev. 3:21
2. Heaven is going to be a place of rest; Phil. 2:24-30, 2. Cor. 11:23
3. Heaven will be a place of revival or renewal; 1. Kings 19:1-8, 1. Cor. 15:42-43
4. Heaven is place where righteousness dwells; 2. Pet. 3:10-13 (SIDE NOTE: I laughed a little to myself because I thought about the Aruba commercials saying that Aruba is where happiness lives. I was like well forget that I'm going where righteousness lives!)
5. Heaven is a place of reunion; 2. Sam. 12:15-23, Heb. 9:27

All in all it was a great meeting. I am trying to completely baptize my life in Christian activities. I was speaking with my father who is an elder and a preacher and I said it must be nice to have your entire life wholly devoted to working for the Lord. I mean his job is to study. I am trying to outfit mine in the same light. I said that to say that if you are in the Atlanta area Conyers COC is having a lectureship this Saturday and Virtuous will be there! LOL actually just me... :-) I think it begins at 9 am so let's support our neighboring congregations!

Gospel Meeting

The Tara COC is having their fall gospel meeting this week and I enjoyed a great lesson on the church by Bro. Caleb Campbell last night. It is so important to support your congregation in everything that it does, that you are able to attend. We had a full house and I was very proud to have been amongst the number. It's one hour and really there is nothing on television on Tuesdays anyway. :) When you think of what you could've been doing if you weren't there, it doesn't compare. And your soul was able to get an extra meal or two this week!

So much to do... So little time

There are so many things happening in October I'm super excited. For one the Tara COC is having their ladies day Oct. 31st and I am making scrapbooks for decoration...fun! The Avondale COC is having their ladies retreat in Savannah Oct. 23-25 and boy could I use a retreat. I already know where I will be spending all of my little money, The Paris Market and Brocante! Also, I am preparing for the Virtuous Launch Party (more details to follow), and speaking of Virtuous it launches in 26 days...excitement!!!!

So much to look forward to, but looking back on Sunday and the awesome sermon given by Bro. Eric Owens of Avondale, all I can say is wow. The sermon was called "Watching for the Master" and was about being a servant of Jesus and being watchful for His return. But the part that I believe had everyone in self reflection was when he asked did people want to live their lives always under construction? He said some people are dirt pushers; they never build anything because if they did they would have to move on to something else. He asked what if you did make your marriage great by working hard or rear God fearing children by actually parenting them; then you would have to move on to the next thing. But some people are so afraid of what's next that instead of building anything they just push the same dirt around in different piles for 5, 10 or 15 years! I definitely don't want to be a dirt pusher and I don't want you to be one either. So let's get our hands dirty and accomplish whatever it is we've been pushing around.

All in a Virtuous weekend

So... I had a great weekend. I celebrated my cousin's sweet sixteenth birthday, went to an young adult Bible study at Avondale Church of Christ, enjoyed a VERY lazy Saturday and went to church on Sunday. The Bible study was especially good because the speaker, Bro. Eric Owens, taught about evangelism and its importance. One of his major points was that evangelism first needs to begin in the home. By rearing God fearing children and saving them you could be responsible for saving countless generations. Because your children will save their children and so on. It was very thought provoking. Also on Sunday, the Tara church of Christ learned of the serious illness of our Bro. William Jones. He is currently suffering from pnuemonia and other health conditions. We (me and the Mr.) went to visit him in the hospital after evening service and he could not even speak. So please keep him and his wife Catherine in your prayers.

On another note GA has been receiving non-stop rain! It's such a blessing... especially after all of the prayers that were being offered for rain. Now we've got more than we know what to do with. But at least hopefully our farmers, lakes and wildlife are benefitting from it. But Mr. sun has come out today so enjoy it while it lasts. Oh and speaking of farmers, well of food, check the ingredients on the foods that you eat. BHT, BHA and TBHQ are common preservatives and have been known to cause cancer. In California you must put a seal on your product that says contains BHT and may cause cancer! Also I checked this morning and it's in women's antiperpirant too! It is banned in almost every country in the world except the USA and Japan! And check out a documentary called Food Inc. coming out in November, which highlights some of the horrible things going into our food and going into making our food. Virtuous will be conducting a free screening of the documentary so be looking for more information on that. I think that's all for today folks. Ciao!

YAY!!!!!!!! The premier issue of Virtuous is complete and will be launched November 1st. Phew! It took a lot of work from a lot of people but it is finally complete. And as I started to rejoice over this feat I realized, it's time to get started on the second issue! Starting this new endeavor is one that I have dreamt of for a very long time and I am so happy it is finally coming to fruition. I have so many ideas for the future of Virtuous and once was told to imagine where you want to be and work backward from there. My head is spinning from the possibilities swirling around inside of it. I promise you can always bet I have like three or four things going at once. :) I am chronically overambitious, but I believe in going big or going home. So I am now getting ready for the launch party, where we will put care packages together for local congregations who have college students away; contemplating concepts for the television show (well web-show), and working on Virtuous' sister publications, Virtuous in College and Virtuous Mom. It's a lot but so incredibly exciting! I dwell in possibility. I can't wait for you all to see the premier issue and receive your feedback. I have officially begun the countdown till the launch ( 6 weeks...wow only 6 weeks)! To hold you over until the launch how about putting your own face on the cover of a magazine with magmypic.com! I got sort of wrapped up on the In Search of the Lord's way blog. Here is a post by Phil Sanders with poll results from Gallup concerning what Americans deem morally right and morally wrong. The results are quite astonishing.

Morally Acceptable Behaviors according to the majority of Americans:
70% divorce
61% sex between an unmarried man and woman
63% gambling
55% having a baby outside marriage
51% doctor assisted suicide

Morally Wrong Behaviors according to the majority of Americans:
91% married men and women having an affair
90% polygamy
85% cloning humans
78% suicide
61% cloning animals

More people thought cloning humans or animals was wrong than believed fornication (36%), homosexuality (48%), having a baby outside marriage (41%), or doctor-assisted suicide (44%) was wrong. Incredibly, more people thought buying and wearing clothing made from animal fur (39%) was wrong than sex between an unmarried man and woman (36%). More people thought cloning an animal was morally wrong (61%) than thought homosexuality (48%), abortion (48%) or having a baby outside marriage was wrong(41%)! I was listening to the radio this morning and Steve Harvey told this very touching story. He said, "I was walking through the airport in Atlanta and I saw a young man who worked there. His pants were sagging and I walked up to him and said 'Young man can I talk to you for a second? I see you've got a lot going for you.' He said me, Mr. Harvey. Then I told him yeah you; come on over here and let me talk to you and why don't you pull up your pants. He pulled up his pants and tucked his shirt in because he wanted to be presentable while talking with me. I told him he looked like he had a lot of potential and I gave him my e-mail address and told him I'd like to stay in contact with him. I gave him a book to read and he read it and said it really changed his life and that he needed a plan to figure out what he was going to do with himself. But I didn't respond for a while because I sometimes go days without checking my e-mail. When I did check he had sent me another e-mail and said, "Mr. Harvey I didn't hear back from you so I bought another book, "Think and Grow Rich," and I bought your book.' It takes me five minutes to write the e-mails that I've been sending him, but I made a great impact on his life. We still stay in contact today."

That story touched me so deeply. What small things can we as Christian women do to be influences on someone else's life? I was at a ladies day and Teresa Eggleston was the keynote speaker. She is in the Air Force and said one of her colleagues would put on her uniform, rent a limo and go and stand on the street where the prostitutes were. She said they were amazed at the limo and uniform and she told them they could have it too. All they had to do was get off the streets and enlist. Such small gestures can go such a long way. Reach out to a young person you know. Compliment them, emphasize the good they are doing, and then find out how you can help them today.

If you're dying to begin cooking you can pick Julia Child's book "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" now in its 49th printing or you can start with this recipe for beef which was a prominent recipe in the film and one of the most famous Child recipes. Here it is: Boeuf à la Bourguignonne (Beef Stew in Red Wine, with Bacon, Onions and Mushrooms)

Boeuf à la Bourguignonne
For 6 people
6-ounce chunk of bacon
9- to 10-inch fireproof casserole, 3 inches deep
1 tablespoon olive oil or cooking oil
A slotted spoon
3 pounds lean stewing beef cut into 2-inch cubes
1 sliced carrot
1 sliced onion
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons flour
3 cups of a full-bodied, young red wine such as one of those suggested for serving, or a Chianti
2 to 3 cups brown beef stock or canned beef bouillon
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 cloves mashed garlic
1/2 teaspoon thyme
Crumbled bay leaf
Blanched bacon rind
18 to 24 small white onions, brown-braised in stock
1 pound quartered fresh mushrooms sautéed in butter
Parsley sprigs
Remove rind and cut bacon into lardons (sticks, ¼-inch thick and 1½ inches long). Simmer rind and bacon for 10 minutes in 1½ quarts of water. Drain and dry.
Preheat oven to 450º. Sauté the bacon in the oil over moderate heat for 2 to 3 minutes to brown lightly.
Remove to a side dish with a slotted spoon. Set casserole aside. Reheat until fat is almost smoking before you sauté the beef.
Dry the beef in paper towels; it will not brown if it is damp. Sauté it, a few pieces at a time, in the hot oil and bacon fat until nicely browned on all sides. Add it to the bacon.
In the same fat, brown the sliced vegetables. Pour out the sautéing fat.
Return the beef and bacon to the casserole and toss with the salt and pepper. Then sprinkle on the flour and toss again to coat the beef lightly with the flour. Set casserole uncovered in middle position of preheated oven for 4 minutes. Toss the meat and return to oven for 4 minutes more. (This browns the flour and covers the meat with a light crust.) Remove casserole, and turn oven down to 325 degrees.
Stir in the wine and enough stock or bouillon so that the meat is barely covered. Add the tomato paste, garlic, herbs and bacon rind. Bring to simmer on top of the stove. Then cover the casserole and set in lower third of preheated oven. Regulate heat so liquid simmers very slowly for 2½ to 3 hours. The meat is done when a fork pierces it easily.
While the beef is cooking, prepare the onions and mushrooms. Set them aside until needed.
When the meat is tender, pour the contents of the casserole into a sieve set over a saucepan. Wash out the casserole and return the beef and bacon to it. Distribute the cooked onions and mushrooms over the meat.
Skim fat off the sauce. Simmer sauce for a minute or two, skimming off additional fat as it rises. You should have about 2½ cups of sauce thick enough to coat a spoon lightly. If too thin, boil it down rapidly. If too thick, mix in a few tablespoons of stock or canned bouillon. Taste carefully for seasoning. Pour the sauce over the meat and vegetables.
Recipe may be completed in advance to this point.
For immediate serving: Cover the casserole and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, basting the meat and vegetables with the sauce several times. Serve in its casserole, or arrange the stew on a platter surrounded with potatoes, noodles or rice, and decorated with parsley.
For later serving: When cold, cover and refrigerate. About 15 to 20 minutes before serving, bring to a simmer, cover and simmer very slowly for 10 minutes, occasionally basting the meat and vegetables with the sauce

So I saw the movie Julie & Julia last night it was wonderful! It's the perfect movie to watch with a group of girlfriends whether you are foodies or not. And just having finished some pizza rolls and twizzlers it is clear that I am not a foodie. But the movie was wonderful I laughed; I cried; I laughed and cried some more. Both portrayals of their respective Julia's was amazing. I love Amy Adams and you would never guess that the same woman from "The Devil Wears Prada" is the same woman playing Julia Child, but that is just the range of Meryl Streep. Well I am rambling but you should totally see it. I would've saw it again if they would just stop asking for $9.50 every time I show up! All I know is Bon Appetite!

Could This Women's World Champ Be a Man?

The speculation surrounding the gender of the women's 800 meter champion Caster Semenya, has already led some media personalities to turn to homosexuality. Some have said that people may be able to be born with both male and female chromosomes therby having a woman in appearance but a male makeup genetically. That has not been proven and does not by any means justify the overly used homosexual sentiment, "I was born this way" or "I was born a man but I am a woman on the inside." Please don't let them change this from what it is into a platform for their twisted agenda. I for one am tired of having it constantly thrown in my face and being told to just accept it. I won't. For example I have been JAMMING to Lady Gaga lately but just recently found out that she said her music is gay, she has gay concerts and so on. So there went her c.d. If you're as tired as I am of this constant abomination before the Lord do something about it. Teach your children, don't support their activities (no matter how good the beat!) Has anyone heard of this new movie "Legion" coming out in Jan. 2010? Here is the plot "In the supernatural action thriller Legion, an out-of-the-way diner becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race. When God loses faith in Mankind, he sends his legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse. Humanity’s only hope lies in a group of strangers trapped in a desert diner and the Archangel Michael (Paul Bettany). Legion also stars Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, Tyrese Gibson, Kate Walsh, Adrianne Palicki, Charles S. Dutton and Willa Holland and is directed by Scott Stewart."

How crazy does that sound? Humanity's only hope is a group of strangers in a diner? What are they going to do reason with the angels; what will they bargain with? Or are they going to overpower the angels and how exactly can they do that with guns? Or is Michael going to disobey God and fight all of the angels for the strangers in the diner? It's VERY unrealistic. I think if God decided to destroy humanity non-Christians wouldn't have any hope especially from a group of misfits in a diner, and on the preview one was pregnant! Anyway just writing to say don't support this humanistic stuff. Try and use it as an ice breaker with a friend or colleague to get a study going; show them the truth. And just another side note, why do angels need guns?

Teach the Word without even trying!

How can you spread the Good news without even trying? In a word, easily.

The main way being your actions. No one wants to study the Bible with someone who acts just like them. How can you transform the world if you've conformed to it? You words and deeds are your most powerful tools; let your light shine so that others may see your good works.

The second way is to read your Bible in public. If you ride public transportation you know that there are always people willing to talk to you about anything... especially men. Why not talk to them about the passage you're reading. Plus others will see you reading and someone might ask you a question they've been pondering. Since you've got the book share it.

Another way is to invite your worldly friends over for a game or movie night with other Christians. Interacting with Christians in a fun environment could be the door opener to an invitation to a Bible study or worship. Alright three down two to go!

You could give spiritual gifts. No not the laying on of your hands. When you give gifts to co-workers or teachers or friends give them something special that also contains a scripture or Bible character. Ask them how they like it, of course they'll say they love it and then discuss the scripture or character on the gift.

Lastly, while you're forwarding jokes and pictures of kittens, forward a Christian PowerPoint or illustration. It could be something you create or get with a friend and make something with the true message of Christ. Just don't try and make people feel guilty by saying that they don't love Jesus if they don't forward it at the end of the message. LOL. Send it to everyone in your address book. And there you have it, five ways you just taught the Gospel without even breaking a sweat.

Speak out against: Homosexuality

Ladies and Gentlemen, there is a war upon us. No, I am not speaking of the war in Iraq. This war is not a physical war; it cannot be seen. Shots are fired and punches are thrown, but this war is a power struggle between good and evil. My intentions, at first were to discuss the pros and cons of homosexual marriages, but I was told, and agree, that the issue is not same sex marriage rights, but the homosexual action itself. Once we begin discussing whether or not people who sin openly should be allowed to make that sin legal, it appears as though we condone the sin itself. Marriage laws are not the problem; the problem is should sodomy be allowed to infiltrate a nation whose pledge of allegiance contains the phrase “… One nation under God…” (American Pledge of Allegiance).

Sodomy is defined as, “Any of various forms of sexual intercourse held to be unnatural or abnormal, especially anal intercourse or bestiality” (Dictionary.com). The Bible says that people who practice sodomy are worthy of death (Holy Bible, Romans 1). Sodom and Gomorrah were two cities destroyed by God because of their homosexual practices. Amazingly, many of them spend a great deal of time trying to be accepted by the church, which teaches the Bible. Once the church accepts something or someone, that something or someone appears normal to society.
What is normal? “Six percent of America bowls (Smith 49).” Since six percent of America bowls, and bowling is normal, then since ten percent of America is homosexual, homosexuality must be normal. Hence, the claim by homosexuals that ten percent of America is homosexual. Two Sodomites, named Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madison, in a writing for gays titled “After the Ball”, admitted that this statement was nothing more than political propaganda. According to these two: “Based on their personal experience, most straights probably would put the gay population at 1% or 2%

of the general population. Yet… when straights are asked by pollsters for a formal estimate, the figure played back most often is the ‘10% gay’ statistic which our propagandists have been drilling into their heads for years (Smith 43).” The first thing that has been established is that sodomy is not normal, which was even admitted by two major homosexuals. The church is not the only establishment under attack; they are also attempting to take over the family.

Some Sodomites, in public speeches, have made claims in the past such as, “It is an alternate lifestyle;” or “It is just another way to live my life (Smith 173).” These are statements made by homosexuals in an attempt to justify the perverse actions they do. Family is defined as, “The group comprising of a husband and a wife and their dependent children, constituting a fundamental unit in the organization of society (Dictionary.com).” The gay propagandists are perpetually at work. “Overseas there are billboards depicting gay and lesbian couples in traditional family settings, of which one is obviously pregnant. These billboards read ‘Another Traditional Family’ (Smith 194).” Since when has anyone needed to spend thousands of dollars to show a “traditional family”? Jesus said, “He which made them at the beginning made them male and female” (Holy Bible, Matthew 19:4). A family is comprised of a set of parents (a male and a female) who mold the views of their children. If this is the case, flags should go up; the parents with the fallacious views are going to mold the moral values of the children?!

“Homosexuals claim that they are just another minority, such as African Americans, Hispanics or women”(Smith 21-22) . This claim is the most frustrating. The only thing Sodomites have in common is the sexual practices they participate in. Blacks and Hispanics cannot change their ethnicity. But countless Sodomites can and have stopped committing this awful act. Homosexuals hope to look back at the 1990’s as their emancipation period, like black people look back to the 1880’s for their emancipation period. They make claims that all they want is their rights. What they do not say is that in order for them to receive their rights, heterosexuals would be required to give up some of their rights. No rights were lost when blacks and women were allowed to vote, to sit in the front of buses, and to eat at the same restaurants as white people. Homosexuals claim that they should be able to choose how they wish to live their own lives, and what they do in private stays in private.

For instance, Pedophilia is defined as, “the act or fantasy on the part of an adult of engaging in sexual activity with a child or children” (Dictionary.com). They do this in private; it should remain their business. They never mention anything about what actually goes on in private. Some things are too nauseating to even say, or print! Pat Califia a homosexual frankly states, “Nobody is fooled when we proclaim that the gay movement has nothing to do with kids and their sexuality… (Sodom’s Second Coming, 107).” Homosexuals are constantly endeavoring to lower the age of consent for homosexual actions or abolish the age limit altogether. “It must be said to homosexuals, if it’s privacy you want, then keep it private! We weren’t the ones who insisted that you come out of the closet (Smith 174)!”

Yet, they make claims that they should not be discriminated against because of actions they have no control over. Some say they were born Sodomites or even worse God made them the way they are. Why would God make someone a certain way, then condemn him or her for it? Their pleas do not sound outrageous, or unreasonable. They simply want to be accepted for who they are. Everyone should just be loved for who they are; they cannot change or help how they act. Which leads one to wonder why kleptomaniacs, people who have an obsession to steal, are not loved for who they are. Serial killers are not loved and accepted for who they are either. How is it that one group that cannot change is accepted while another group who cannot change is shunned? Warren Throckmorton, Ph.D., writes for a web site named NARTH, “National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality”, he sums it up well when he says, “Here's one more human trait that is highly heritable: weight and body type. This trait is estimated to be 60-80% related to genetic influence. If homosexuality is out of control at 50-60%, then what of one's physique? I can hear the doors of gyms, fitness centers and infomercial studios slamming shut now. Why bother to try to change something so clearly due to genetics? Oh, to have inherited the six-pack "ab" gene! There may be one trait that is determined. I guess we could call it journalistic determinism, because it appears that many journalists are determined to find that gay gene. I really shouldn't be so hard on them, they probably can't help it (Kaufman).”

Ladies and Gentlemen the war is raging on. Which side are you on? On one side there is a group of individuals, related only by the sexually immoral lives they live. They claim privacy is what they want, but storm court-houses and hold more galas and parties than should be allowed in one year. On the other side are people who see the sin for what it is, who are not biased against the people only the actions committed by those people. These people see the progression of perversion and are making every effort to stop it. If allowed to prevail how long before they want rights no one has. These people and their concocted civil war must be met and challenged or else the moral values of America will continue to erode. For a nation that was founded on belief in God; and most of which still claim such belief – we often do not act like it. Gay marriage - that is not the discussion; whether or not a nation should encourage, and endorse something so obviously wrong as sodomy is the question. We must not encourage these immoral people or attempt to justify their actions. Write a letter to your congressman and your state legislature; ask your preacher to preach a sermon speaking against homosexuality. Write to the local paper about this, do what you can. The culture and lifestyle of America depend upon it. It is best summarized in one sentence stated by my father, “What used to be the norm is now the exception, and America is worse off because of it.”

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... or is it?

If I said I could tell you how to be beautiful to everyone that had the privilege to look upon you, would you want to know? Of course you would! And I can tell you how. Plenty of people have told me I was beautiful and I do not say that to be conceited I say that because there are also plenty of people who think that my looks are nothing to write home about. But both of these people are looking on my outward appearance. Almost everyone that I've met would agree that my inward beauty is fierce. And that is the kind of beauty I want to continue to cultivate and I want you to cultivate.
Jim Carey, in the movie "Liar Liar" said the statement that real beauty is on the inside is a lie that ugly people made up. That could not be further from the truth.You can ask any man and they will tell you that it wouldn't matter how beautiful a woman was on the outside if she's ugly on the inside. Men don't want to be around those kinds of women.Proverbs 21:19 says, "It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman." And Proverbs 27:15 says,"A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike." Both of these are refelctions of her inward beauty. So how can you be beautiful to everyone? By following these three simple steps:

1. Make sure you are FIRST beautiful to your Heavenly Father.

The Bible says that God doesn't see as we see. He doesn't look on outward appearances but on the heart. Check your intentions next time you pass a mirror instead of your hair. Your heart will reveal itself to others, and if your intentions are evil people will see right through your "good" deeds or looks.

2. Reduce the shine on your T-Zone

Change the channel from the ME network and get the focus off of you sometimes. Find out what you can do to help someone else. Romans 12: 15-16 says "Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits." Get involved in someone else's life and dreams and let them know that you are there for them in happy and sad times.

3. Finally think on these things

There is power in positive thinking and people love to be around it, look at it and feed off of it. Thinking positively leads to acting positively. Acting positively could be anything from smiling,keeping a promise or running errands for the elderly. Emitting positive energy makes other people positve and they love to be near you and that makes you beautiful.

If you look like this on the inside everyone and I do mean everyone will see your beauty.

Fallen Princess Project

The Fallen Princesses project explores alternate endings for some of Disney's most recognizable princesses. Dina Goldstein is the photographer. What if "happily ever after" isn't so happy after all? JPG Magazine publishes a full article with more insight from Goldstein, and they offer a preview of the series. This series is so poignant because real life is not a Disney fairy tale. Young women all over should see this. I feel the most sad for Rapunzel. What do you think? You can find the article here.

Ring Out the Message

It is amazing how inspiration can strike at any moment. I'm sitting in worship this morning and we're singing Ring out the message but it was the final verse that grabbed my immediate attention. "Sin and doubt to sweep away till shall dawn the better day, ring it out ring it out. Till the sinful world be won for Jehovah's mighty Son, ring it out ring it out."

It's estimated that women NEED to speak an average of 15,000 words a day while men speak that many in a week. I wondered how many of those 15,000 words do we spend discussing or telling someone about Jesus? It just seems to me that as much as women NEED to talk {it's a scientific fact, look it up men :)} we could save the world. Imagine in one week we've spoken 105,000 words. I don't know how much each person you spoke to would need, but try it out. Use your words for Jesus instead of the latest episode of whatever new show is out and let us at Virtuous know how it goes. We're going to be using our words differently too!
